MICROWARE COMES OUT WITH AN EVEN SLIMMER DAVIDLITE OPERATING SYSTEM

By CBR Staff Writer

There are skinny embedded operating systems and skinny embedded operating systems, and Des Moines, Iowa-based Microware Systems Corp seems to have decided that its OS-9-derived David was getting a bit corpulent, so it has now come out with DavidLite, the first open system software package configured specifically for digital video products requiring reduced software size and functionality: target markets are still cable television, digital direct broadcast satellite and wireless cable networks. It still supports 68000, PowerPC and iAPX-86 with full MPEG 1 and MPEG 2; requires 256Kb of ROM and under 128Kb dynamic RAM. Communications support is optimised for one-way networks with minimal to no return channel.
