Microsoft and YuLong Computer Telecommunication Scientific (YuLong Telecommunication), have revealed a patent licensing agreement that enables YuLong Telecommunication to integrate Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol on the company’s mobile phones.

By licensing Exchange ActiveSync, YuLong Telecommunication can provide mobile users with the ability to synchronise e-mails, calendars, contacts and notes between mobile devices and Microsoft Exchange Server using Exchange ActiveSync direct push technology. As a result of this agreement YuLong Telecomunication plans to release Coolpad brand handsets pre-installed with Microsoft direct push technology.

Exchange ActiveSync is a communication protocol which allows mobile clients to synchronise e-mail, calendar, contacts and tasks with Microsoft Exchange Server. Microsoft has been licensing the Exchange ActiveSync protocol for mobile devices since 2003.

Since the launch of its IP licensing program in December 2003, Microsoft has entered into more than 500 licensing agreements and continues to develop programs that make it possible for customers, partners and competitors to access its IP portfolio. The program was developed to open access to Microsoft’s research and development investments and its patent and IP portfolio.

Steven Chen, senior director of Microsoft Business Division China, said: “We are pleased to enter into this patent licensing deal with YuLong Telecommunication for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.

“Microsoft is committed to enhancing the consumer experience through intellectual property (IP) collaboration, and we believe this deal is an important step in continuing to work more collaboratively with companies in China to help deliver better products to consumers and develop a more vibrant IT industry.”

Li Wang, standing vice president of YuLong Telecommunication, said: “People in China, as well as the rest of the world, are demanding more secure, better wireless synchronisation with their mobile devices. Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync technology has become the choice for mobile synchronisation and communication around the world.

“By implementing the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync specification technology, we are enabling our customers to easily manage their Exchange e-mail, calendar and contacts on their mobile phones.”
