Microsoft Corp has won Southwestern Bell Corp, San Antonio, Texas as the first Baby Bell to take its video-on-demand software: Southwestern’s Video Services unit signed Microsoft and Lockheed Corp to provide software and systems integration services for the video and interactive television project in Richardson, Texas. The project will offer programmes from broadcast and cable television and other interactive services, such as video-on-demand, home shopping, education and interactive games, and the company plans to provide telephone service on the new network early next year. Microsoft will supply end-to-end software, including that connecting television set-top boxes and personal computers in consumer’s homes with head-end services; Lockheed’s Media Systems Integration group will be responsible for ensuring that all parts of the system work in concert.
