According to stories emanating from the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PCs and Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphones variants will be subsumed under an all-encompassing Windows Mobile brand.

Microsoft spokesperson Scott Horn said the reason behind the move reflects the increasing availability of cellular network capabilities in Windows Mobile devices. However, he conceded that the company would have to be more explicit in communicating device capabilities in order to avoid confusing customers. Pocket PC in particular has become a familiar term for buyers of PDA-style devices.

Microsoft has long made it clear that it intends to converge its disparate mobile device platforms around a single, all-encompassing version of Windows Mobile. This likelihood has increased as the code base for the two platforms has become more similar since the move to Windows CE .NET 4.2 as the underlying operating system.
