MICROSOFT VOD TRIALS DON’T START UNTIL LATE NEXT YEAR

By CBR Staff Writer

Microsoft Corp has said that it will start testing its video-on-demand services in Seattle, Richardson and Tokyo by mid to late next year. Microsoft, which developed the television screen menus used to select films or television programmes, will carry out trials in conjunction with cable and telecommunications companies. Trials in Seattle will be in conjunction with cable television company Tele-Communications Inc, SBC Communications Inc’s Southwestern Bell will work with Microsoft to provide video on demand trials in Richardson, Texas and Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp will act as a carrier in Tokyo, Japan. Microsoft said that it had a further six telecommunications companies that were willing to beta test the service in late 1996 and early 1997.
