Where most of the famous majors have been cutting back, Microsoft Corp plans to increase spending for basic research by 300% in 1997, the New York Times reports. The spending will create the world’s largest computer science laboratory within the next two years and will be devoted to blue sky technologies and developments that may not have a pay-off for many years. Overall, Microsoft now spends $1.4 bn annually on research and development, and the Microsoft Research organization, set up five years ago to pursue general computer science problems, now has 170 scientists.
