Microsoft Corp has confirmed rumors (CI No 3,173) that it is to set up its first overseas research and development unit in Cambridge, UK. The company is to invest 50m pounds ($80m) in the center, collaborating closely with Cambridge University. The lab will be run by the University’s Professor Roger Needham. Microsoft will also invest a further 10m pounds ($16m) in Cambridge area technology firms, including 5m pounds in Acorn Computer Group founder Hermann Hauser’s new 30m pound Amadeus 1 venture capital fund for technology companies.
