Reuters quoted Mike Nash, head of Microsoft’s security business unit, as saying the company still plans to offer anti-virus software, but that it would not be bundled with Windows. No delivery date was given.
The company has been very quiet about its plans for anti-virus since it bought GeCad Software srl, a Romanian company, last year. Security firms privately feared Microsoft would give it away for free, hitting their businesses.
At the time of the GeCad acquisition last June, executives told ComputerWire Microsoft had not decided how to deliver the software, although virus definition updates would be sold via a paid subscription.
