To open data center, the region is ready to provide to Microsoft an allotment between Angarsk and Irkutsk. The data-center will be connected to Transtelecom fiber optic line. It will be a bank of data reserving the information, said Andrei Gubov, governor of Irkutsk region.
The Irkutsk region attracts Microsoft mostly because of its stable energy supply. The data-center of such capacity will consume roughly 50 MW. A similar data-center for 100,000 servers in Ireland will cost roughly $500 million, said Birger Sten, chief executive at Microsoft Russia.
Earlier this month, Microsoft confirmed its plans to build data centers in Dublin, Ireland and Chicago. Furthermore, Microsoft is also building a data center at San Antonio and expects it to be operational by July 2008. All these data centers will complement Microsoft’s existing data centers at Quincy, Washington, and San Antonio, Texas.
In April 2007, Microsoft’s competitor Google confirmed its plans to spend $600 million for its new data center facility at Berkeley County, South Carolina.
