The software, which will be rolled out internationally, was developed in collaboration with Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok, which treats more than 1.2 million patients from 190 countries each year. It gives Microsoft the ability to penetrate the huge international market for hospital software with a system that manages clinical workflow, billing, regulatory compliance, and medical records.
Microsoft said it will continue to work closely with Bumrungrad to further build out the functionality and features of the GCS technology.
The GCS system is a suite of 50 clinical and back-office application modules designed to run all hospital clinical and administrative operations on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and is in use in seven hospitals around the Asia-Pacific region.
Microsoft said a new offering based on the GCS technology will complement the its Azyxxi software, which provides a data integration capability for hospitals with legacy systems already in place. Washington-based Azyxxi, which was bought by Microsoft in July 2006, is designed to bring together all types of patient data from hundreds of sources and makes them instantly available at the point of care.
Healthcare is a sector that Microsoft has selected for expansion that offers a vast and growing market and fragmented competition.
