The bug caused the software to give inaccurate results when the spreadsheet showed results for the number 65,535 – it instead showed 100,000. A similar problem occurred with the number 65,536.

Microsoft’s David Gainer blogged that the problem was with how the number was displayed and not how the number was actually calculated. This is an issue in a function that puts numbers in cells, so the values in Excel’s memory are actually correct, Gainer said at the time. Any calculations based off that cell will be accurate too.

Two weeks later, late Tuesday, Microsoft made patches to fix the problem in Excel 2007 and Excel Services 2007 on its web site. Thank you for your patience, Gainer said.
