Microsoft offers “unlimited support” concession to EU

Microsoft Corp has offered "free, unlimited technical support" to licensees seeking to implement Windows Server communications protocols in a bid by the software giant to meet objections lodged by the European Commission.

The company has also offered provide on-site assistance to licensees to further help facilitate the development process.

Microsoft is facing the threat of a daily fine of 2m euros ($2.4m) by the EC after it was accused of not providing adequate documentation that would allow non-Microsoft work group servers to achieve full interoperability with Windows PCs and servers.

Microsoft claims to have devoted more than 30,000 hours to the development of indexed and searchable documentation to allow its competitors to access the specifications they need to build products that implement Microsoft’s protocols.

Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said the new documentation, together with free and unlimited technical support and access to Windows source code, will ensure that competitors have all the assistance they need to make the EU’s program effective.

Microsoft has upped its previous offer of up to 500 hours of free technical support to unlimited technical support, on-site if necessary.
