ISA Server 2004 is the company’s combined application layer firewall, virtual private networking, and web caching software. The beta 2 version is now available for download, and on CD, for evaluation.

The latest version will raise the standard of Microsoft’s network security offering through the enforcement of comprehensive security policies and new deep-content inspection capabilities. The 2004 version also includes administration interface and performance improvements, according to the company.

ISA Server began life as the Microsoft Proxy Server and has slowly evolved into a full-featured web-caching and firewall server that includes several core security functions such as intrusion-detection capabilities and bandwidth control.
