MICROSOFT LIMITED RELEASE OF FIRST NT VERSIONS

By CBR Staff Writer

Microsoft Corp says it is now releasing the first version of Windows NT – the 80386-80486 version – to some software developers and corporate customers: the Windows 32-Bit Development Kit incorporates an alpha version of Windows NT nearly 2m lines of source code – comprising the 32-bit operating system, a 32-bit Windows-compatible windowing and graphics system, an integrated LAN Manager client and server, and the development tools Microsoft reckons are necessary to develop 32-bit applications for Windows; applications developed with the kit will run not only under Windows NT but also under future versions of Windows for MS-DOS, the Redmond company promises – the whole thing comes free – and the price includes related support.
