The audio watermark technology is designed to enable information that identifies the content and describes its range of permitted uses to be embedded into copyrighted film and video content prior to its distribution.

Clifford Friedman, of Verance’s Board of Directors, said: We believe our solution will help enable the future digital convergence of video entertainment and Windows-based computing products.

Microsoft also commented that the move is indicative of its desire to offer innovative systems that encourage new ways for consumers to enjoy film and video entertainment in the home and on the go.

Universal Pictures, a division of NBC Universal, had previously announced that it will begin deploying the Verance watermark throughout its distribution channels, including theatrical releases, home video product, pay-per-view, video-on demand, free-to-air television broadcasts, and other future distribution formats.
