Under the all the noise about Windows 2000, Microsoft Corp is quietly broadening the scope of its NT operating system, introducing a thin client version of the OS – Windows-Based Terminal (WBT) Professional – for higher-end thin client devices. WBT Pro is itself based on the newly revamped modular Embedded NT 4.0. The client-side software would be used with Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition on the server side. Microsoft already has a version of WBT based on Windows CE, but the NT versions adds Internet Explorer 5, better graphics performance and increased peripheral support. The software is expected to ship in the first quarter of 2000.
