Microsoft Corp handed out beta 1 versions of both Microsoft Windows NT Server version 5.0 and Windows NT Workstation 5.0 to the 6,200 developers at its Professional Developers Conference in San Diego last week, and will also distribute it to key corporate customers and 200,000 developers via the Microsoft Developer Network. The final versions of 5.0, due out in the latter half of next year, although an official release date has not been set, will include the ActiveX directory, centralized configuration management, optimizations for symmetrical multi-processing, storage management and distributed security services. The next beta version will add the IntelliMirror PC management software, broader device support and better migration tools, says Microsoft, and will address customer feedback from the current beta 1.
