Microsoft Corp is claiming victory as a result of the European Commission’s decision which means that Santa Cruz Operation no longer has to pay it $15 for each copy of the Unix operating system it sells. Most commentators saw the decision, which will save SCO $4m a year, as a victory for the EU over Microsoft’s corporate muscle. We are gratified that the European Commission rejected SCO’s request for further action and approved our request to close the file on the case, said Brad Smith, a top Microsoft counsel. The EU is also looking at the Internet Explorer issue – a move that must be causing Microsoft rather more concern.
