The company unveiled Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2004 which features a new console, rapid deployment capabilities and improved management packs for various Windows servers.

Microsoft also announced the beta release of Automated Deployment Services (ADS) for Windows Server 2003, for provisioning and administration. The XML-based ADS provides for server deployment and image-based creation, editing and scripting tools.

The products are elements of Microsoft’s Dynamic Systems Initiative (DSI), formally announced at the company’s annual Management Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada. Microsoft said DSI will bring simplicity, automation and flexibility to IT operations, by addressing operational needs through the IT lifecycle.

DSI centers on System Definition Model (SDM), an XML-based schema to capture and simplify reporting and instrumentation of servers. SDM will be extended to the Windows server operating system, .NET Framework and Microsoft application development tools.

The company said it would start delivering on DSI with Windows Server 2003, due next month. The server features automated deployment services, dynamic systems resource management, volume shadow copying, network load balancing, server clustering and virtual server.

MOM 2004, and Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, will become part of the Microsoft Systems Center suite and will also be extended to support SDM. Using SDM, the management packs of the current MOM product will become language neutral, providing instance-aware cluster support, advice and diagnostics for Windows Server 2003, Active Directory, the .NET Framework, Exchange Server, BizTalk Server and SQL Server.

Other changes in MOM 2004 include a new operator console featuring alert views and a reporting engine to trace performance, and configuration and automation options to reduce deployment time.
