Regrouping to fend off advances by Novell Inc and its new Univel joint venture with Unix System Laboratories Inc, Microsoft Corp has combined its networking operation with its NT operating system developers to create a Corporate & Network Systems Group headed by Paul Maritz, formerly vice-president of Advanced Operating Systems; Microsoft is also positioning NT for both the client and the server just as Univel did at its debut a few weeks ago. That apparently means two versions of NT, one, reminiscent of Univel’s Destiny package – stripped down for the desktop but capable of peer-to-peer networking, the other, complete with symmetric multiprocessing and fault tolerance.
