MICROSOFT BRINGS OUT NEW VERSION OF NETSHOW

By CBR Staff Writer

Microsoft Corp has released the latest version of its NetShow networked multimedia streaming software with full support for RealAudio and RealVideo files.Version 2.1, like its predecessor, enables the streaming of production- scale video, audio, and audio with synchronized images over the internet and corporate intranets. It already supports Microsoft’s Advanced Streaming Format (ASF). With the new version, Microsoft has added client support for Windows 3.1, Macintosh, and Unix, in addition to existing Windows 95 and NT support to enable more internet users to access streaming content authored in ASF. It now includes the beta release of NetShow Theater Server which uses a distributed architecture to provide a scalable system to deliver full-screen video services and high-bandwidth video in high demand environments. The Theater Server lets NetShow deliver a range audio and video support from 14.4 Kbps internet connections up to entertainment- quality video over dedicated local and ATM networks, Microsoft said. Microsoft has taken a serious interest in the streaming video market this summer. In August it bought internet streaming company, Vxtreme Inc and two weeks earlier bought a stake in Progressive Networks, now renamed RealNetworks, home of RealAudio and RealVideo. Version 2.0 of NetShow came out earlier in the summer and the first version was introduced back in December of last year. Microsoft NetShow 2.1 is available for free download from its web site at www.microsoft.com/netshow/download.htm.
