Microsoft adds Infolio technology to search toolbar

Microsoft Corp gave its search capabilities a boost after picking up Onfolio Inc, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based internet company this week for an undisclosed sum.

By CBR Staff Writer

Onfolio develops add-in software that lets users save, annotate (with notes, flags, keywords) and manage information returned from their web searches.

Our core competency is providing users with the tools to enable them to save, collect, and share that information as they conduct research on the Internet, said company officials. It also has an RSS aggregator and reader tool.

Microsoft is integrating Onfolio’s software into its Windows Live Toolbar beta to provide a convenient way to collect and organize online information on their PCs to use them in documents, emails and blogs.

The move is part of a strategy by Microsoft to catch up with search leaders like Google Inc.

Previous versions of Onfolio’s software have worked with Microsoft Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and other browsers like Netscape. But support for non-Microsoft browsers now looks unlikely to continue. Microsoft has already said that a new version released this week will cease to support Firefox Web browsers.

Onfolio is offering refunds to non-Microsoft browser customers who recently bought personal or professional versions of its software from its Website and now find themselves left out in the cold.

Onfolio was founded by JJ Allaire who seems to make a habit of selling off his software start-up ventures. He also co-founded Web development tools company Allaire Corp which was bought by Macromedia for $360m in 2001.
