Microsoft will release fitness band, not a smartwatch

The device will still display smartphone notifications.

By Ben Sullivan

Microsoft reportedly won’t be releasing a smartwatch, but instead plans to bring a fitness band to market similar to the Samsung Gear.

Sources told Winsupersite that unlike Samsung’s fitness trackers, however, the Microsoft device will be compatible with iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices. The device will display smart phone-style notifications.

The device should come kitted out with numerous sensors that track steps, calories burnt and heart rate, with all of the data running through Microsoft’s Bing Fitness app.

Last month it was reported that the heart rate sensor will be ‘always on’, enabling users to measure health 24 hours a day.

Following the release of Microsoft Office for iPad, the possible cross-platform approach of the Microsoft smartwatch rings true of Satya Nadella’s call for Microsoft’s software to be available on all devices.

Apple is also set to enter the smartwatch market this year with a possible release of the iWatch. Google also recently announced its entry into the smartwatch race by releasing Android Wear, a smartwatch operating system that will first be seen on the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch.
