Microsoft to spend over $8bn on cloud strategy this year

To meet targets owing to emerging and European markets growth

By CBR Staff Writer

Microsoft is planning to concentrate its R&D efforts on cloud strategy.

Microsoft International president Jean-Philippe Courtois said the company will spend a bulk of its R&D budget on cloud strategy this year.

Courtois told Bloomberg that Microsoft will spend about 90% of its $9.6bn research and development budget on cloud strategy this year.

Courtois added Microsoft will meet targets in 2011 because of growth in emerging markets and Europe.

Last month, Microsoft had opened a new cloud and Interoperability centre (CIC) in Brussels to help drive the adoption of cloud computing.

Courtois had said, "We see a strong future ahead for a robust and dynamic cloud economy in Europe. We view investment in this Cloud and Interoperability Center as an important part of Microsoft’s role in working to lead a proactive cloud computing strategy for Europe."
