Microsoft nails the budget phone, releases €19 Nokia

Dual-sim, video player, and a flashlight!

Microsoft Devices is cementing its commitment to low-end budget mobiles by announcing the Nokia 130 today, a dual-sim mobile device which will cost just €19.

The phone features a built-in video player, music player, a flashlight, FM radio and USB charging.

The Nokia 130 has a colour 1.8-inch display and claims to provide 36 days of battery life on standby.

Microsoft says that every year, more than 300 million under-$35 phones are sold, and with the Nokia 130, Microsoft aims to continue to expand in this sector.

"The Nokia 130 is the perfect introduction to a "mobile first" world," said Microsoft.

Jo Harlow, corporate VP for Phones at Microsoft, said: "As demand in the affordable mobile segment continues to grow, Microsoft remains committed to delivering market-leading mobile innovation at each and every price point.

"It is estimated that at least 1 billion people in the world still do not have a mobile phone, while at the same time there is increasing demand for reliable backup phones in both mature and high-growth markets."

The Nokia 130 also supports expandable microSD storage up to 32GB, alongside the Bluetooth-enabled SLAM application and USB connectivity.

Harlow continued: "With handsets like the Nokia 130, we see tremendous potential to deliver the experience of a ‘mobile-first’ world to people seeking their first device, and we continue to invest in ultra-affordable devices that will introduce people to a ‘cloud-first’ world through Microsoft services such as Bing, Outlook.com and OneDrive."

The device is expected to begin shipping in the third quarter of this year and will be available in select markets, including China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Vietnam.
