Microsoft has launched touchscreen editions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint for Android tablets, available freely for personal use from the Google Play store.

The release follows a three-month preview programme which allowed the company to test the apps out across a range of Android tablets, with the suite joining the existing OneNote for Android released last August.

Kirk Koenigsbauer, CVP of Office 365 Client Applications, said: "We designed these apps to be unmistakably Office, while optimised for Android tablets.

"Customers will immediately feel familiar with the Office ribbon. Large touch points make it easy for even the fattest of fingers to navigate commands. External keyboards can be connected but certainly aren’t needed."

Customers of Office 365 will be able to access additional features by logging into the app with their business credentials, and those using devices with screens above 10.1 inches will also be required to log in to use the programs.

In addition to the above Microsoft launched a preview edition of Outlook for Android alongside the release of the full Outlook for iOS, both of which allow customers to access their Gmail, Yahoo and Microsoft email accounts.
