Microsoft has filed a patent application for a new smartwatch that would function both as a fitness tracker and as a music player, phone and messaging device, CNN Money has reported.
According to the report, the company filed the application in October 2012 but released the information only recently.
Microsoft’s smartwatch design will reportedly resemble iPod nano 6th generation and has a detachable option where it can be disconnected from the watch casing and connected to a charging dock.
The new smartwatch, if developed, will compete with the likes of Samsung, Motorola and Pebble who are ahead of Microsoft in the smartwatch market.
While Pebble has reportedly sold 400,000 of its smartwatches, Samsung launched Galaxy Gear in 2013 and Motorola will likely launch its Android Wear-based 360 watch in the summer of 2014.
Microsoft, however, has not clarified whether the new smartwatch will be released to the market.
