Microsoft has collaborated with Dropbox to help users of Office software store and share files via the online file-sharing firm’s website and mobile app.
The deal will also benefit Dropbox users running Office software across the desktop, mobile, and the web, as Microsoft’s suite will now be the standard. This allows the editing and access of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files from directly within the app.
The new functionality will be integrated in the next updates to Office mobile apps, set for launch in the next few weeks, while the online accessibility is set for launch by the first half of next year.
Dropbox said in a statement: "These new features will be rolling out to all Dropbox users on iOS and Android in the next few weeks.
"Next year we’ll be extending these features to the web by adding integrations between the Dropbox website and Office Online.
"We’ll also be releasing a Dropbox app for Windows Phone and Windows tablet users in the coming months."
In addition to enabling users to edit and access Office docs from the Dropbox mobile app, the latest deal would also allow sharing Dropbox links of Office apps and also to create first-party Dropbox apps for Microsoft’s mobile offerings.
The latest move comes after another storage firm Box integrated with Microsoft Office 365, which allows users to share, edit and save docs in Microsoft’s suite of apps and also allow sharing links to Box files in Outlook.
