Microsoft has compiled 30 PC models of different manufacturers and configuration in a consumer guide website called "The Collection" in a bid to popularise its Windows 7 OS.

This years collection includes PCs by nine manufacturers which will be found in major retailers in the UK and at www.windows.co.uk/thecollection.

The 30 computers selected by Microsoft have been "designed for individuals’ and cover five categories: Professional, Entertainment, Everyday, Gaming and Mobile Companion.

In the website, the company says, "Now you can experience the full power of the web with Internet Explorer 9, choose from a wide range models in style, size and colour to suit your lifestyle."

"With touch screens and tablets that let you get even closer to your content. Whatever you’re looking for in a PC, you’ll find it in The Collection, from Windows."

Microsoft said it plans to launch three "Collections" each year.

Microsoft UK managing director Ashley Highfield said that teh launch of The Collection pointed to the "end of the beige box era of computing and the beginning of another where computers are appealing things to own and use."

Windows UK chief Leila Martine said, "We’ve created The Collection to inspire people and make it easier for them to find the right PC for their individual needs and budget."
