Microsemi, a manufacturer of analog/mixed signal integrated circuits and semiconductors, has expanded its line of system modules for powering light emitting diode (LED) backlit displays. The family now includes three-string applications for 3.5 inch to 7-inch displays.

Microsemi said that the new modules, LXMG1930-28, join the company’s recently rolled out LXMG1960-28 high performance LED driver modules for 6-string applications. Together, the modules form a family that gives designers of medical, point-of-sale (POS), kiosk, and ATM a choice of easy ‘plug and play’ options for their applications.

Microsemi claims that based on its LX1996 LED driver integrated circuit, the new module family offers high performance features including string-to-string current matching for enhanced panel brightness uniformity, multiple dimming options, and safety protection against LED shorts, over-voltage and over-temperature operation.

According to Microsemi, the new modules features PanelMatch technology, which allows programming LED string currents, so that a single module can drive a range of panel designs; and StayLIT technology, which allows continuous operation if one or more strings experience short-circuits or are open.

Other features include: analogue, digital, and analogue+digital dimming options for energy conservation and improved dimming ratio; external thermistor signal integration capability to protect LEDs in an over-temperature environment; protection from output LED short circuits, over-voltage, and over temperature operation. The LED driver consists of converter and three programmable precision current sinks.

Irene Signorino, director of marketing for analogue mixed signal group at Microsemi, said: This product family addresses requests we’ve had from long-time Microsemi customers to supply LED solutions with the same performance, quality, reliability, service, and supply chain structure they’ve experienced with Microsemi’s proven CCFL complete system solutions.
