Chatsworth, California-based, Micropolis Corp has added the Taurus 4110A low-profile, 3.5 Integrated Device Electronics disk drive, to its family of IDE drives. The Taurus 4110A combines 1Gb with a 1 profile and lower power consumption. At 8.25 Watts while seeking, the disk offers a 33% reduction over previous models, the company claims, while the built-in, automatic power-down feature further reduces power consumption when the drive is not active, meeting the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency. The drive’s AT/IDE command set supports the new power management features in the latest BIOS implementations, increasingly important for users implementing the US government’s energy conservation guidelines. The Taurus 4110A spins at 5,400 rpm, reducing the average rotational latency to 5.56mS and the on-board IDE controller provides a high-speed data transfer rate of up to 10M-bytes per second. With an average seek time of 8.5mS, the Model 4110A is 20% faster than the benchmark winning Model 2210A. Available now, it costs $1,165 in single-unit quantities.
