Chatsworth, California-based Micropolis Corp has revealed what it claims is the first video server shipping with MPEG-2 video decoders. According to the company, its AV Server with MPEG-2 boasts a maximum data rate of 15Mbps per channel and additionally supports MPEG-1, -1.5 and -2 bit streams from SIFF Standard Interchange File Format to full CCIR-601 resolution. The new offering is designed to meet requirements for on-air programme applications including digital ad insertion and video cacheing, says Micropolis. Each Micropolis Multi-Channel MPEG-2 Video Decoder Board, which utilises C-Cube Microsystems Inc’s CL-9100 chips for video compression, provides up to four composite video channels at up to 6Mbps per channel and offers four channels of 48KHz DAT quality stereo audio output. The AV Server can host up to 16 decoder boards for a total of 64 channels, providing up to 252Gb total capacity for over 120 hours of video at 3Mbps, says Micropolis. MPEG-2 Servers are shipping now to system houses, value-added resellers and OEM customers; no prices given.
