Microcom Software Division Ltd, the UK subsidiary of Norwood, Massachusetts-based Microcom Inc, best known for the Microcom Network Protocol, has released an MS-DOS version of its anti-virus product Virex, originally designed for the Macintosh. Called Virex-PC, it both detects and prevents a range of IBM personal computer viruses, and can repair files if the damage isn’t irredeemable, Microcom says. It incorporates a program called VPCScan which scans files, directories, and disks for over 70 virus signatures. The second component is a terminate and stay resident program. It calculates a file signature for each executable file, and notifies the user if the file has been modified or formatted, and if there has been an attempt to read or write to specified files. There are four security levels that enable the system administrator to select each user’s level of virus security, and a password system provides added security for several users of the computer. It is available for MS-DOS micros and costs UKP95. Users may buy updates or subscribe to an annual update service for UKP65.
