The energetic team pursuing Newbury, Berkshire-based Micro Focus Plc’s Emerging Technologies Programme has now made it up to Beaverton, Oregon to do a deal with object database developer Servio Corp. Servio is to provide a high-performance production engine for executing objects and the two plan to offer a complete object database environment designed to increase the speed at which object technology matures and is adopted for large enterprise-wide business applications. Micro Focus will be a reseller for Servio’s entire product line – GemStone, GeODE, GemStone Smalltalk Interface, GemStone C++ Interface and GemStone C Interface and the GemStone Databridge. Micro Focus is already distributing the Digitalk Inc Parts object-oriented, component-based development environment, enabling users to Micro Focus Workbench to work in a visual object-oriented development environment to develop applications or wrap legacy code into re-usable components; adding the GemmStone products will enable Micro Focus to offer a complete object-oriented, rapid application development and production environment, the company says. Micro Focus and Servio are now investigating potential long-range efforts that include the storage of persistent Object Cobol objects in the Servio GemStone database, making Smalltalk and C++ objects and classes accessible to Object Cobol. In the near term, Micro Focus, Servio and Digitalk are working on a point-and-click object-oriented front-end to enable storage of object-oriented types of data in a repository-like environment.
