In case you hadn’t noticed, Micro Focus has recently been advertising for a Cobol evangelist (someone who will help to develop the product and will authoritatively and vociferously defend it against repeated claims that it is dead) and has now filled the vacancy by appointing Jerry Garfunkel to the position: Garfunkel (brother of Art) has always been part of Micro Focus in his capacity as an independent consultant and has guided the development of Cobol over the past decade, but has now chosen to formalise the relationship and will be based both at Newbury in the UK and Palo Alto in the US; a Micro Focus employee says he shudders to think what size salary Garfunkel is drawing from the company but then Micro Focus is cash-rich, and is there a more sensible way of spending your money than ensuring that the god of Cobol is on your side in the 1990s?
