The MFS Intelenet subsidiary of MFS Communications Co is putting the cat among the local and long-distance pigeons with a plan to launch a local phone service in the New York metropolitan region aimed at small- and medium-size businesses – and to provide local and long-distance service as one carrier: subscribers to its service in New York City will be able to place calls to five outlying area codes in the metropolitan region without incurring long distance charges, and it will also offer long distance service at a single rate to anywhere in the US using a switching technology that determines the lowest cost route depending on the time of day and destination of the call; in particular, it will link subscribers to its Metorpolitan Area Networks in other big cities, and its buying its own big exchanges from L M Ericsson Telefon AB.
