Inhabitants of Mexico’s 60 biggest cities will be able to choose between competing long-distance carriers from January 1 1997 under a resolution on long-distance telephone competition announced by the Ministry of Communication & Transportation: 40 more cities, to be agreed between Telefonos de Mexico SA and other carriers yet to be named, would have access to long-distance carriers other than Telmex from 1998, 50 more in 1999 and 50 more in 2000; Telmex’s concession grants it exclusive rights to offer local service until the end of 2026 and long distance until 1997; it must provide services to all operators of long distance public networks in the same conditions it provides to its own long operation.
