Chris Christianssen of the Meta Group believes that Digital Equipment Corp’s PolyCenter announcement will focus on its concept of hierarchical storage management and that its system management approach will involve wrapping pieces of the Open Software Foundation’s Distributed Computing Environment and Distributed Management Environment up in DEC’s Architected Information Management system: tools from Computer Associates International Inc and DEC will run in this enhanced architecture and Computer Associates has apparently been talking to users about the management of systems via the VMS entry file system; VMS version 6.0 is not due out till next year and there is industry scepticism that without substantial changes to the operating system, system management will be tricky.
