Mercury Communications Ltd told Reuter yesterday that a report in the Independent that it was conducting a key strategy review that might halt expansion was pure speculation – It’s a very interesting speculative piece, a spokeswoman said – But I can’t confirm that there is any major review going on; the paper said Mercury might stop building its UK-wide telephone network after a fundamental review of its strategy carried out by Mercury chief executive Mike Harris, which could result in it focusing even more on providing advanced services for businesses and a small number of wealthy domestic customers as price competition started hurting its business.
