Memorex Japan is also planning to start a third party maintenance service for peripheral repairs and software upgrading: as in Europe, third party maintenance is a growth business in Japan, and Memorex Japan already has a maintenance network around the country for the IBM-compatible tape and disk drives it sells; much of its work already involves connection of the disks and tapes to other manufacturers’ computers, so it will be just a matter of extending maintenance to cover the other equipment, which will initially extend from large IBM disk drives, to all IBM computers from mainframes to Personals – but if user demand is there, it will also extend to Fujitsu, Hitachi and NEC computers; in Japan, NCR Japan and Nippon Olivetti are already in the business, but the market may have as much as 40% annual growth potential.
