Memorex Telex International NV has gone to Sunnyvale-based Cygnet Systems Inc for the library module of its new Model 3500 write-once optical storage subsystem for IBM mainframes, claimed to provide access to a library of 1,362Gb of data in seconds. The Cygnet module includes a robotic accessor mechanism, up to four optical libraries, each containing two to five Hitachi or Laser Magnetic Storage Inc optical disk drives, and a maximum of 131 12 optical disks; the controller comes from Alpharel Inc, Camarillo. The 3500 comes in two models: the A20 which operates in image processing mode, and the A80, which emulates an IBM 3480 tape subsystem; no prices were given for the product.
