Fremont, California-based Media Vision Inc has introduced a software-based audio compression system that it says enables MS-DOS software developers and hardware manufacturers to offer higher quality sound: the technology is claimed to make possible the development of sound applications taking up a quarter the space previously required, and the creation of a single compressed sound file that can be used with every type of MS-DOS-compatible sound board; it is designed to provide compression and decompression of audio in real time, handling 16-bit 44KHz stereo files, so that applications can use the host processor without requiring specialied signal processors; the algorithm is designed to the specifications of the Interactive Multimedia Association recommendations for sound compression and the technology is available from Media Vision as an audio compression developer kit offered at free to software and hardware manufacturers.
