MCI TO PROVIDE LINK TO CUBA

By CBR Staff Writer

MCI Communications Corp is to become the first US long-distance carrier in more than 30 years to provide a modern phone link to Cuba, and Williams Cos’ WilTel International Inc has signed with the Cuban phone company EmtelCuba to set up the first fibre-optic link between Cuba and the US: MCI says its service will start as soon as approvals are received from the US government, which late last year eased its trade embargo on Cuba; the WilTel-EmtelCuba cable, Cubus 1, is to span the 100 miles across the Straits of Florida; the cost, to be shared equally between the two partners, was not revealed.
