Flush with the promise of $4,300m from British Telecommunications Plc, MCI Communications Corp chairman Bert Roberts says the company is looking very strongly right now at an investment in a cellular venture or alliance. In an interview with Reuters, Roberts characterised MCI’s cellular intentions as along the lines of a joint venture, or alliance or provision of communications between cellular properties. Roberts said MCI is also seriously mulling investments in multimedia ventures. All telecommunications companies have to be in mutlimedia, Roberts said, which suggests that the first appointment of Daniel Akerson, who just quit as MCI president, should be to receive Roberts to talk business at his new charge: he is taking over as chairman and chief executive of General Instrument Corp, the market leader in cable television equipment. Akerson also becomes a general partner of the major shareholder, Forstmann Little & Co.
