MCI Communications Corp completed the acquisition of Digital Equipment Corp’s New England fibre optic network on undisclosed terms: the 240-mile system was built by DEC to support advanced telecommunication applications such as high speed data, digital imaging, video conferencing, CAD/CAM, as well as voice communications and it currently links DEC offices and other facilities in Eastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire; it will now be connected to MCI’s Boston network to provide local telecommunication services to other customers in the area, MCI said, noting that Massachusetts is one of the few states that permits competitive local telephone service.
