MCCAW CELLULAR TO TAKE CONTROL OF LIN BROADCASTING

By CBR Staff Writer

But what does McCaw Cellular Communications plan to do with British Telecommunications Plc’s $1,500m (see page four, inside)? A strong tip is that it will use at least some of the cash to seek to take control of LIN Broadcasting Co in New York, which as well as cable and broadcasting interests has a stake in one of the New York cellular franchises, which would give McCaw its first foothold in a major metropolitan franchise – at present all its operations are in smaller US markets; McCaw currently holds a 9.8% stake in LIN, and has a bid out to take its holding up to 15%.
