Network security and management company, McAfee Associates Inc, has bundled its system management server tools into a single suite dubbed SaberTools SMS that it claims increases the functionality of Microsoft Corp’s System Management Server. The package combines the company’s Remote Desktop 32 with its WinCompare script generation component, desktop menu management and metering technology. WinCompare takes an application installed on a server and automatically configures it for each machine on the network according to the administrator’s configuration file modifications, simplifying SMS script generation and distribution. The suite also includes McAfee’s Remote Desktop 32 – the technology it bought from Austria’s Johannes Kepler University to break the dominance of Symantec Corp’s PCAnywhere 32 in the Windows 95 and NT remote control market. Its functionality largely duplicates what’s already in SMS. In the US, SaberTools’ two-year subscription package costs $3,000 for 100 workstations with a discount at $25,000 for 1,000 workstations. Included in the price is two years of free upgrades and unlimited telephone support. Remote Desktop 32, standalone, costs $100. McAfee has also put together a $70 bundle of its VirusScan anti-virus program.
