Bob Jones, the former power behind Mayze Systems Ltd – which was sold to Dowty Group Plc in 1989 for UKP6.1m, has popped up again with a new company called Sonix Ltd with which he is hoping to tackle the combined ISDN and modem market. Jones has raised UKP2.1m start-up funding, mainly from Schroder Ventures, although Dowty has a 10% share – no doubt to pass to Cray Electronics Holdings Plc, in return for which, it has released him from previous Mayze-related commitments. First products are due in November and should include some innovative ISDN local area network linking kit. Jones says he hopes Sonix will fit nicely between customer-starved ISDN manufacturers and the commodity modem market.
