The Republic of Ireland has wasted no time in finding a new tenant for the abandoned Nixdorf Computer AG plant in Bray, County Wicklow, and the new arrival, Maxtor Corp, has come in promising a very substantial bounty of jobs – 1,500 within five years. It is also Ireland’s first Winchester disk drive manufacturing company. The 77,000 square foot Maxtor Ireland Ltd plant will initially manufacture Maxtor’s LXT line of 3.5 drives, with first production – of the 213Mb model – set for the first quarter 1991. Maxtor planners reckon the plant will be expandable to 250,000 square feet.
