Maxtor Corp is ready with limited quantities of the highest capacity PCMCIA disk drive yet, the 105Mb 1.8 PCMCIA Type III MXL-105-III drive. The firm hopes the launch will offset the humiliating rescue effected by Hyundai Electronics Co’s cash input. European vice-president John Shaw said Maxtor will now launch a major product every quarter for the next five years. Early 1994 sees the arrival of the next generation of PCMCIA, with 50% more capacity than the MXL-105-III. Shaw said one of the factors reducing Maxtor to its current doldrums was its previous sales strategy. Products were continued to keep customers happy rather than to suit Maxtor’s development cycle. But the arrival of new management two years ago changed that, and since some of the newcomers are ex-Intel Corp, Shaw said: They’re injecting some of the success of semiconductors into our business. Shaw admitted Maxtor is unsure how it will be affected by the Hyundai deal but he said: It turns our future from tough to extremely rosy.
